Music marketing ideas for 2020

Music marketing and the whole music industry has gone through drastic changes over the last years. It seems like that the constant change is the name of the game from now on.

Before the digital era, the music industry had been the same for dozens of years. Now you have to constantly educate yourself and try new trends and platforms, if you want to succeed.

I would say we are currently living in the era of everything or nothing.

In this article, I’m going to cover all the interesting music marketing ideas you should try in 2020. Let’s go!

Pinterest music marketing

Pinterest is still fairly an unfamiliar platform to many people. You may be wondering, how one can possible use a picture sharing platform such as Pinterest to promote music?

There is one main key difference when comparing Pinterest to other social media platforms. Other social media sites do not want you to leave their platform. That is why they don’t want you to add too many links to your posts, which would lead people away from their platform.

Pinterest can be also used to drive traffic to your music.

The reason why they do this is that the longer you hang out on their site, the more you see their ads and they gain ad revenue. Their algorithms favours posts, which does the best job to keep people on their platform.

Pinterest, however, encourages you to add links to your posts. This enables you promote your music business and songs in a much effective way. All you need to do is to get traffic to your Pinterest account.

Use TikTok to market your music

TikTok has been rapidly growing in 2019 and there’s no sings of slowing down.

TikTok allows you to share and market your music somewhat similar way than Instagram. However, TikTok’s organic reach is much better than currently any other social media site’s.

This is why you should start to use TikTok, if you are not already using it. I recently created a TikTok account. By the time I’m writing this, I only have 10 followers on TikTok and I’ve uploaded 4 videos. The newest video generated almost 1000 views, even though I got so little following.

With that being said, there’s no way you could get more organic reach on any other social media site. TikTok is still growing and developing so now is the time to hop on the train and be on the driver’s seat.

Create a music blog

With a music blog, you are able to drive traffic to your music and gain more exposure. You can also help other producers and even earn money by selling courses, guides, materials, etc.

Be active in your niche

The are so much new music and content upload to the internet each day. Therefore, it can be hard for you to stand out.

One good way to increase your music’s visibility is to engage your followers. Make sure to answer every comment you get on YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, Facebook or other social media sites.

Don’t just thank your followers who commented your music. Try to have a small conversation with them and encourage them to respond. This can be done by asking them questions, for example.

Naturally, you should always respond to your direct or personal messages you may receive on social media. You also need to respond to all the emails you receive. After the conversation, you can use the opportunity to encourage them to follow you or listen to your songs.

Use influencers to promote your music

Many companies are using influencers to advertise their products or grow brand awareness. You can also use Instagram influencers to promote your music content.

The good thing about influencers is that they are usually relatively cheap. You can get a shout out from a popular influencer for 5$. Ads can be much more expensive.

Don’t just aim for the users who has hundreds of thousands followers. They can be very expensive and hard to reach.

A better strategy is to contact so called micro influencers, who has less following, but much better engagement rate and cost. Micro influencers are users who usually has couple of thousand followers.

Instagram marketing
Instagram influencers can help you to get new listeners.

If you are on a tight budget, you can ask other producers or influencers to share your content in exchange for you sharing their piece of content.

This is good way to build trust and collaborate with other people. You are able to combine both of your audiences, which helps both of you to find new followers.

Be consistent

Consistency is the ultimate key to victory, especially on the long run. If you don’t share or upload new content regularly, your followers will forget you and unfollow you.

This is why you need to put out new content daily. Remember that you can’t just upload anything, it needs to be quality content that gives value to the followers.

Determine who are the people in your audience. Where they live, what is the average age of your followers, what things they like to do daily and what languages do they speak. Once you’ve figured out those things, it’s much easier for you to create content that appeals to them.

If you find it hard to come up with good content ideas, here are some examples:

  • music previews
  • production sessions
  • tutorials
  • self portraits
  • quotes
  • memes
  • funny pictures
  • music videos

When you are about to upload content, make sure to upload native content only. What I mean by this is that you should modify your content’s resolution, size and style to fit each social media site’s preferred format.

For example, Instagram prefers that videos you post on your feed should be 1:1 ratio. However, TikTok’s preferred ratio is 9:16. This means that you should alter your content the way that it fits to every social media sites you are using.

Remember that it’s not all about the ratios or sizes of the content. Some platforms prefers video content over images and vice versa. You should always figure out the best ways to deliver your content on each platform and social media site.
